We are proud of launching a new Internet based logical thinking and
problem solving skills development program A Maths Question A Day (MAD) in Australia.
What is A Maths Question A Day (MAD)?
MAD is a web-based learning platform. Simply using a browser with internet connectivity,
children gain access to interactive, interesting and stimulating mathematics or problem
solving brain teasers. The selected questions are challenging and fun, stimulating students' minds
to find solutions. All questions are solvable and require no advanced knowledge of other
subjects. Doing these questions with assistance from parents not only encourages children to
develop higher order thinking but also nourishes family relationships.
MAD offers rich-media mathematics and problem solving questions year round.
It delivers an interactive question each weekday to subscribers via the Internet.
Where do the questions come from?
The majority of these interesting and stimulating questions come from the British Government's
Department for Education and Skills (DfES) research project. Those questions were designed and
developed by leading academics from the United Kingdom and around the world.
What curriculum do the questions cover?
The mathematics questions which cover a wide mathematics curricula as taught in schools and
provide the challenge of Problem Solving questions which simulate daily situations, science
problems, design technology and mathematics that require in-depth problem solving technique
and high order thinking skills. Many MAD questions are based on real life circumstances.
They call for logical thinking and analytical skills in a student that arouses their interest
in learning mathematics and science.
What are the levels?
MAD provides two levels of difficulty: Rabbit (recommended for aged 8-11) and Leopard
(recommended for aged 12-14). Each student will be given an individual report
showing their overall performance while top scorers' names and results will also be shown on the website.
How do I get "MAD"?
The only requirement is an Internet Browser, such as IE on a PC with an internet connection.
MAD offers a new question every weekday. Students are required to submit the correct answer within
five days of the question being posted to gain points.
We recommend a visit to the website: www.learnlex.com to review
to review the free trial questions.
World Class Arena
Students who wish, at a future time will be eligible to also participate in World Class Arena test after a
minimum of 6 months MAD participation. It is expected that their experience gained from MAD should provide
good results in these tests. In this program, questions are drawn from science, design technology and
mathematics, but require high-level problem solving skills rather than subject knowledge. Task type is the
most important aspect of assessing problem solving skills within World Class Tests. These types are:
i) Design or plan
ii) Select, evaluate, recommend
iii) Model, estimate, predict
iv) Critique and review
v) Deduce from data, fit constraints
vi) Discover or infer relationships
vii) Translate
